Intro to MS Project: Real-Life and Hands-On

Description

Microsoft Project is easy to start using, but new users quickly fall into traps. Why are those dates moving? How do I produce a solid, complete schedule? How do I update and status my schedule?

This two-day course gets new Microsoft Project users past those early traps and pitfalls. You learn practical techniques based on the best practices of real schedulers. All training involves hands-on exercises and the opportunity to apply these techniques to your actual schedules.

Many MS Project courses teach the software as if it were just another office tool, showing what each menu item does. This course is taught by and for real project managers and schedulers. By completing this course, you will get the skills needed to build real schedules, update them quickly and efficiently, and track your project results.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, you will know how to:

  • Build a project schedule in Microsoft Project
  • Create Gantt charts, network diagrams, and team member assignment sheets
  • Track actual accomplishments and task progress
  • Reschedule and reestimate in-progress projects
  • Create project baselines and reports that show actual progress against these baselines
  • Understand the tools available to track and monitor resource use and allocation

This course focuses on single-project scheduling. The course will mention multi-project features of MS Project, but it will not explain those features in depth. Intermediate or Advanced courses cover these topics.

Prerequisites

Students should have basic knowledge of project management terms like work breakdown structure, network diagram, and the critical path method (basic “Intro to Project Management” or equivalent work experience).
